Choosing a boat, not a brochure

Ha Long Bay receives several hundred vessels. They are not equivalent. The difference between an excellent night on the water and a disappointing one comes down to the route, the size of the boat and how many other vessels moor in the same spot after dark.

We recommend Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long more often than the main Ha Long route. The scenery is comparable and the anchorages are considerably quieter.

What to consider before booking

These factors matter more than the star rating printed on the itinerary.

• Cabin count, since a twenty-cabin ship feels nothing like an eight-cabin one
• Route and overnight anchorage, which determines how crowded your evening is
• One night for a first taste, two nights to reach the quieter waters
• Mekong river cruises connecting the Delta with Cambodia at an unhurried pace
• Kayaking, swimming and cave visits, and whether they are optional or fixed

Practical notes

Sailing is weather dependent. In the rare event a departure is cancelled for safety, we handle the rearrangement and the refund rather than leaving you to negotiate at the pier.
